SInce it's the weekend, and that's drive-in time, we're doing a movie poster double feature today. On the bill: Plan 9 From Outer Space and Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!

Click for Larger View... Click for Larger View...Plan 9 From Outer Space is a production by Ed Wood Jr, who had a amazingly unsuccessful career as a producer/director/actor in the 1950s and 60s. None of Ed's movies were successful, and he died penniless. He was redicovered in the 80s when he was pronounced "Worst Director of All Time". Tim Burton produced a biopic about Wood and his odd, but loyal group of associates (Ed Wood (1994)) with Johnny Depp in the starring role. It's an excellent movie, I highly suggest a viewing.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is probably Wood's "masterpiece". With horrible acting, embarrassing sets, and lousy directing, it's probably the best known example of bad movie making. Which of course makes it a must-see for our Big Bad Readers.

Our Favorite Movie Posters: # 7 - Mister - X (1967) PDF Print E-mail

mister_x_1967_poster_01 mister_x_1967_poster_01According to a review we found on IMDB: "Mister X, a mysterious thief and master of disguise and his ever lovely cohort, who steal more for the thrill than the having, are brought out of retirement to clear Mister X's name. A evil crime lord has killed his girlfriend (who knew too much) and has pinned the rap on Mister X.

Mister X becomes Avenger X as he takes on the crime syndicate. This film fits in nicely to the Euro spy/crime thriller genre typified by movies like Danger: Diabolik, Modesty Blaise and Operation: Kid Brother. Featuring a wonderful soundtrack like so many of the psychedelic thrillers of the period."

Well, OK, but on the poster he looks like a Batman ripoff, which is probably what they were going for, as it was 1967, (guess what pointy eared superhero was Bat-Popular on American TV at that time?) and it was common practice for foreign producers to try to get a little more mileage out of a bad movie by insinuating it had something to do with a currently popular theme, movie, or television show.

captain_america_poster_01 captain_america_poster_01We are happy to present a poster for "Captain America"! No, not the one that's in the theaters right now... Um no it's not set in World War II, well, partially, but see, it's set mostly in the 1990s, and Captain America has a shield that apparently dents easily, and um... no, Chris Evans and Tommy Lee Jones aren't in it, but Ned Beatty and Ronny Cox are, and ... No, he doesn't squeal like a pig, but... Wait! Come Back! Please? SOB!

Story Line (IMDB): During World War II, a brave, patriotic American Soldier undergoes experiments to become a new supersoldier, "Captain America." Racing to Germany to sabotage the rockets of Nazi baddie "Red Skull", Captain America winds up frozen until the 1990s. He reawakens to find that the Red Skull has changed identities and is now planning to kidnap the President of the United States.

Box Office Gross (IMDB): $10,173 (UK)

Switchblade_Sisters_Poster Switchblade_Sisters_PosterSwitchblade Sisters was a 1975 Chixploitation movie that didn't do well during its initial release. It went into the drive-ins and grindhouses for a week, sold some popcorn, and immediately went on the 2nd and 3rd feature circuit. One person who didn't overlook it was Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino is on record as saying Switchblade Sisters is one of his all time favorite movies. He grabbed the rights to the movie and re-released it to the theaters in limited distribution a few years back. He has also released it on DVD on his "Rolling Thunder Pictures" label. The DVD reviewed here is the "Rolling Thunder" release.

The Switchblade Sisters revolves around "The Dagger Debs" an all-girl gang led with teeth baring intensity by "Lace" (Robbie Lee), the baddest meanest female gang leader since Black Canary was in charge of the Justice League. It's a good thing she's tough, because she dresses like a disco band reject, and when she bears her teeth she looks like an angry beaver, plus when she talks it's like being threatened by Rainbow Brite talking through clenched teeth.
